Sometime in the latter part of the first decade of the 21st Century, Sanford turned his artistic attention to the most crass of all genres. Possibly because he desperately needed cash, or maybe he had just run out of anything remotely like ideas, for several years the artist focused on Celebrity Portraiture. Delighting in highlighting the shortcomings and embarassments of the fleetingly famous, Sanford joined the trash-cultural-pile-on of reality television and celebrity gossip by painting such stars as Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, the Olsen Twins, and many others. At the same time celebrating and shaming these easy targets Sanford reached new creative lows while producing some truly absurd and gauche paintings.
